"This upsetting account of a Los Angeles serial killer, written with passion by Christine Pelisek, an investigative crime reporter who spent 10 years working the case, blurts out a hard truth that no one wants to acknowledge . . . [She] tries to restore dignity to some of the victims by drawing sympathetic and carefully detailed life histories for each and every one of them." ―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review

In 2006, Christine Pelisek broke the story of a terrifying serial killer who went unchecked in Los Angeles for decades. Two years later, in her cover article for L.A. Weekly, Pelisek dubbed him "The Grim Sleeper" for his long break between murders. The killer preyed on a community devastated by crime and drugs and left behind a trail of bodies―all women of color, all murdered in a similar fashion, and all discarded in the alleys of Los Angeles.

The case of the Grim Sleeper is unforgettably singular. But it also tells a wider story about homicide investigations in areas beset by poverty, gang violence, and despair; about how a serial killer could continue his grisly work for two decades in part due to society’s lack of concern for his chosen victims; and about the power and tenacity of those women’s families and the detectives who refused to let the case go cold.

No one knows this story better than Pelisek, the reporter who followed it for more than ten years. Based on extensive interviews, reportage, and information never released to the public, The Grim Sleeper captures the long, bumpy road to justice in one of the most startling true crime stories of our generation.

"Regrettably, Pelisek excluded the was unconvincing LAPD's complacency in investigating the six serial killers plaguing South Central Los Angeles and blaming their victims for their victimization, and LAPD's own officers shortage of officers to sufficiently handling all of the homicides in the black community. Pelisek deftly praised LAPD mobilization of its resources despite years confrontation from an activist group and the fact that a black serial killer was captured after having killed three white women in West Los Angeles. But 100 African American women had to die before the fires of of active investigation were lit that led to the capture of the Grim Sleeper. The absence of and in depth exploration of racism and classism in the investigation of the Grim Sleeper and the other killer operating with impunity is a glaring omission in an other wise discourse on this daring killer."

The Grim Sleeper The Lost Women of South Central Christine Pelisek 9781640090231 Books Reviews

  • I already knew about this case from having a Los Angeles Times subscription. But writer Christine Pelisek went deeper into the Grim Sleeper case because it was a huge part of her daily life for 10 years.

Pelisek's main strength in this book was making you the reader, feel some compassion or actually care about the women that Lonnie Franklin Jr. killed.

Yes, the majority of the women he killed were deep into the street life (drug usage, prostitution, strawberrying, and etc.). But that doesn't mean that these women's lives didn't mean something. Because if you read this book, you would have seen just how much these women's deaths affected their families back in the 1980s and in the present time.

In essence, pick up this book if you want to read a good true crime book and you want some closure on the Grim Sleeper case.
  • A stellar piece of true crime writing that goes above and beyond your typical "serial killer" recap. Pelisek does a deep dive into the lives of the actual victims affected by the Grim Sleeper, and the dark, disturbing aftershocks that continued to throttle the families of those killed. Up there with other true crime classics like THE STRANGER BESIDE ME, THE GOOD NURSE and THE RIVERMAN. Pelisek deftly covers the facts and explores the personal stories surrounding the case while also framing it with her own personal experiences while covering the case - from her beat up car to the poignant loss of her parents near the conclusion. It's a near-perfect piece of journalism with a touching human angle that feels genuine and immediate. Highly recommended.
  • Regrettably, Pelisek excluded the was unconvincing LAPD's complacency in investigating the six serial killers plaguing South Central Los Angeles and blaming their victims for their victimization, and LAPD's own officers shortage of officers to sufficiently handling all of the homicides in the black community. Pelisek deftly praised LAPD mobilization of its resources despite years confrontation from an activist group and the fact that a black serial killer was captured after having killed three white women in West Los Angeles. The absence of and in depth exploration of racism and classism in the investigation of the Grim Sleeper and the other killer operating with impunity is a glaring omission in an other wise discourse on this daring killer.
  • This is a fascinating study of the decades-long search for the murderer of dozens of women in Los Angeles. You can tell the writer cared about these women, forgotten by society, but not by her and their families and by the detectives who never gave up.
  • This book gave a chapter for each victim, spending the time to tell their stories from birth to death. Instead of focusing only on their drug addiction and sex work the author instead took the time to get to know them and tell us who they really were. For that only the book gets five stars.
  • A most informative and well written book, there was very little coverage of these terrible crimes in the news, probably since all the victims were African American, and the media did not see fit to cover this. A good read if you are interested in crime stories, I do wish there had been more
information about the killer, but the information on all the victims were so well researched and very well written.
  • An informative read but Pelisek writes like a reporter, factual, dry, so it lacks some of the drama this may have been able to present. That said, she was in the middle of the action so she does provide some unique perspectives. It is a good history of the events.
  • This is by far one of the best account of the Lonnie Franklin’s (Grimm Sleeper) slayings. Details complete task force investigation, how police missed vital clues and how the community was frustrated by the lack of information from local authorities
