These poetic, inspiring essays offer insights into the world of a gifted woman who was deaf and blind. Helen Keller relates her impressions of life's beauty and promise, perceived through the sensations of touch, smell, and vibration, together with the workings of a powerful imagination.
The World I Live In comprises fifteen essays and a poem, "A Chant of Darkness," all of which originally appeared in The Century Magazine. These brief articles include "The Seeing Hand," "The Hands of Others," "The Power of Touch," "The Finer Vibrations," "Smell, the Fallen Angel" "Inward Visions," and other essays. "Optimism," written while Keller was a college student, offers eloquent observations on acquiring and maintaining a sense of happiness. These essays reflect the author's remarkable achievements, as expressed in her honorary degree from Harvard, the first ever granted to a woman "From a still, dark world she has brought us light and sound; our lives are richer for her faith and her example."

  • If you're having a bad day you should read this book, and then compare your misfortunes to her's, and realize that you have no reason to be less optimistic than she is.

As for the book itself, she is an excellent writer. I was amazed at her ability to use that "show, don't tell" concept given her condition.
  • This is just a fabulous book! It provides the reader with the innermost thoughts of a spectacular human being. God was merciful to Helen and provided her with superior intelligence which was a large factor in her ability to overcome her double dose of sensory disabilities. I recommend this very short book of essays to everyone!!
  • An amazing read! Helen Keller had a masterful vocabulary and her perspective is something to behold. The "entitled" generation should be forced to read this book. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
  • I am blown away by this book! To imagine that the beautiful and descriptive writing came from a person who lost her vision and hearing at 18 months old is simply mind blowing. Her view of the world is fascinating and uplifting. I love it and even bought another copy for my son!
  • I am halfway through this book and I can truly say it's such an inspiration!
  • extraordinary that a blind/deaf person could express herself in many ways, our ways. Well told.
  • I learned a lot about Helen Keller
  • Words cannot express how wonderful this book on Helen Keller is to read.
