Grading From the Inside Out Bringing Accuracy to Student Assessment Through a StandardsBased Mindset How to Give Students Full Credit for Their Knowledge Tom Schimmer 9781936763856 Books Reviews

  • As a high school teacher who has experimented with standard-based grading the past two years, I can honestly say this is one of the best books within the field of education I have ever read. It lays down the basic mindset needed to shift your views on assessment while not attempting to give you all the answers. Instead, Schimmer guides you to thinking what would work best for your district and classroom. A must buy for those looking to reflect on their teaching and assessments!
  • Overall a good book on standards-based grading practices. I found some points to be counterintuitive to grading for the visual arts because practice is a large part of the learning process and I feel that if the students do the work, they should receive a grade for it.
  • Typical education book. Lots of great ideas, but not a lot about how to go about doing the changes. What do colleges think of no grades? This is right minded, but will be a hard sell for parents and higher education.
  • For those interested in healthy grading practices (e.g. Standards-Based Grading) but are still operating within the constructs of traditional reporting, "Grading From the Inside Out" is a necessary addition to your library. Not only does it lay out the need for grading reform, but it also offers how teachers can adopt these practices/changes while still teaching in schools that require traditional reporting.
  • Reading this book for new school year, makes lots of sense since formative and summative assessments are the push at schools. Food for thought. Recommend it.
  • As an educator in a school system moving towards Mastery-Based Learning, this book was a welcome read. I had heard about it from a Twitter chat I participate in. I am very pleased with the simplicity of the book. It isn't filled with educational jargon or theories, but rather practical applications for today's classrooms. I highly recommend this book!
  • A must read for all educators. This book is insightful and a game changer.
  • This book addresses so many of the issues we experience w/implementation of standards-based grading. Highly recommend.
